L.A. Book Launch: Paul Vangelisti and Vincent Katz at Beyond Baroque

Join us for an afternoon with poets Vincent Katz and Paul Vangelisti. Katz will present Daffodil, published by Alfred A. Knopf, as well as Accounts, his collaborative book with painter Richard Bosman, published by Karma Books. Vangelisti will read from his recent book Traveling, published by Shearsman Books in the U.K.
Both poets are prolific writers and translators whose work has been influential in contemporary poetry and the arts. Katz lives in New York City, while Vangelisti, a longtime figure in Los Angeles poetry, lives in Pasadena.

About the authors
Vincent Katz is the author of the poetry collections Broadyway for Paul (2020), Southness (2016) and Swimming Home (2015) and of the book of translations The Complete Elegies of Sextus Propertius (2004), which won a National Translation Award from the American Literary Translators Association. He is the editor of Black Mountain College: Experiment in Art (2002), and his writing on contemporary art and poetry has appeared in publications such as Apollo, Art in America, ARTnews, The Brooklyn Rail, and The Poetry Project Newsletter. As curator of the “Readings in Contemporary Poetry” series at Dia Chelsea, Katz also edited the anthology Readings in Contemporary Poetry for the Dia Art Foundation. He lives in New York City.
Paul Vangelisti is the author of more than thirty books of poetry, as well as a noted translator from Italian. Just in Time (2024) was published by Lithic Press, and Motive and Opportunity (2020) were published by Shearsman Books in the U.K. In 2015 he edited Amiri Baraka’s posthumous collected poems, S.O.S.: Poems, 1961-2014, for Grove Press. In 2006, Lucia Re’s and his translation of Amelia Rosselli’s War Variations won both the Premio Flaiano in Italy and the PEN-USA Award. In 2010, his translation of Adriano Spatola’s The Position of Things: Collected Poems, 1961-1992 was awarded the Academy of American Poets Prize. From 1971–1982 he was co-editor, with John McBride, of the literary magazine Invisible City and, from 1993–2002, edited Ribot, the annual report of the College of Neglected Science (CONS). He lives in Pasadena.
About Beyond Baroque
Beyond Baroque is one of the United States' leading independent Literary | Arts Centers and public spaces dedicated to expanding the public's knowledge of poetry, literature and art through cultural events and community interaction. Founded in 1968 as an experimental literary magazine, Beyond Baroque is based out of the original City Hall building in Venice, California. The Center offers a diverse variety of literary and arts programming including readings and workshops. The building also houses a bookstore with a large collection of new poetry books for sale.

If you are attending in person, ticket purchase is required. Tickets will be available at the Beyond Baroque bookstore on the day of the event, but we recommend registering in advance through Eventbrite. Masks are encouraged while inside our center. Please arrive early.
