“Kāhuli” broadly refers to land snails, not just the famous Oʻahu tree snails. Land snails provide and maintain key ecosystem services, are important sources of food, and facilitate litter decomposition and nutrient cycling — all services and functions Hawaiʻi rely on. At least 759 species of land snails are native to Hawaiʻi, and 99% of them are found nowhere else in the world! Unfortunately, most of them are critically endangered.
