Come on out to Mr. G’s Bar and Grill on Wednesday, January 29th from 6-9pm in Middletown and join members of the Kentucky Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers along with fisheries biologist and technicians from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources as we talk about invasive carp in Kentucky and how we can help to get them out of our waterways.As we draw closer to the end of winter, a lot of us are already thinking about spring fishing. As much fun as catching bass and crappie can be in the Spring, another great fishing opportunity is fishing for invasive Asian carp. Asian carp, or silver carp, are established throughout the Mississippi, Tennessee, Cumberland, and Ohio river and many of their tributaries. This group of invasive fish are of concern due to their high reproductive potential and fast growth, which allows them to establish in new areas quickly and outgrow most predators. Additionally, the silver carp often leap out of the water when frightened leading to personal injury and property damage to recreational users on the water. Due to these concerns, there are no limits placed on these fish. They can be caught using bow, snagging, spearfishing, or basic rod and reel.
At this Pint Night, we not only will be talking about these fish and how they got here, but we will also be sharing techniques on fishing for them along with locations where you can pursue them. Fishing for invasive carp is incredibly fun and as an added bonus, they are also delicious table fare. We hope you’ll come away from this event with the desire to go after some this year and even cook them up for your friends and family. Who knows, you might even be able to walk away from this Pint Night with a recipe or two, or maybe even some fillets. Time will tell! So, come on out, and invite some friends!
As are all of our Pint Nights, this will be a casual, fun way to meet fellow hunters and anglers, swap stories and learn about BHA and our mission to conserve public lands and waters. BHA members advocate for public hunting and fishing and we work to maintain and improve access to places to hunt and fish. We also speak up for wildlife, guided by the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. Finally, we believe in and advocate for fair chase in pursuit of fish and game.
