Kwanzaa 614 is a seven-day celebration that honors community, family and heritage of African American culture and and African traditions. Kwanza comes from the Swahili word meaning "first harvest" and is based on the seven principles of Nguzo Saba. We, along with TAWI Family Village, invite you to enjoy two festive evenings of Kwanzaa, featuring African drumming, live music, dance, storytelling and hands-on art activities. This event is FREE.
This event is being co-hosted by several cultural institutions throughout Columbus. See a schedule below:
Dec. 26 – First day of Kwanzaa is at Ohio History Center in partnership with Tawi Family Village. Umoja (unity) is the principle.
Dec. 27 – Urban Strings will host a tea 2–4 p.m. at Martin Luther King Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Urban Strings is led by Catherine Willis. Kujichagulia (self-determination) is the principle.
Dec. 28 – Broad Street Presbyterian Church will host. James Preston Poindexter Foundation planning and presenting. Ujima (collective work and responsibility) is the principle. 4:30-7:30 p.m.
Dec. 29 – King Arts Complex and Lincoln Theater will host at King Arts Complex. Ujamaa (cooperative economics) is the principle. 4-8 p.m.
Dec. 30 – No Host. The principle is purpose. Nia (purpose) is the principle.
Dec. 31 – At the Ohio History Center. This is the principle of Kuumba (creativity).
Jan. 1 – Families get together at home. Principle of Imani (faith).
