About this Event

Winter Solstice is the longest night of the year, where we have an opportunity to turn inwards and connect with the inner light that burns inside of all of us. This year we have individually and collectively experienced an immense amount of transformation, and Austin has continued to become a beacon for some of the brightest lights in the world to come together, to broadcast stories of hope and possibility for our larger human family and to fan each others flames in our own backyard.

Throughout history, societies across the world have held festivals and ceremonies marking Winter Solstice, the day of the "Sun’s rebirth.”

Most often, Winter Solstice celebrations honored the symbolism of fire and light, along with life, death, the rising sun, and the moon. We invite you, our beloved Kuya Community to come together and commune with the spirit of Fire as a way to honor the Earth and her elemental teachings, and to remember the ways to honor the elements within.

To support us in this communion, we welcome two internationally renowned heartists, musicians, story-tellers, and medicine carriers; Ixchel Munay and Isidro Ovejas.

They'll be joining Jess Magic and the Band of Yes in offering a heart-opening Kanna Cacao Ceremony to ring in the Winter Solstice by singing and dancing our prayers, and celebrating the season through soul-centered intimacy.

is a songstress, ceremonialist and facilitator who focuses on creating spaces of "irreverent reverence" where we can embrace our sensual, or sacred and our silly selves. She has been gracing Kuya as the Minister of Culture and Community and is excited to co-create a ceremony that allows for the fine folks of Austin to come together and experience the full range of aliveness and our connection to nature through music, dance, prayer, conversation and in the moment creative improvisation.
