Het Cult Night najaar in Studio Skoop sluit Kuru af met een van de sterkste horrorfilms van de 21ste eeuw: ‘The Wailing’, hoog genoteerd in de Top 250 Horror Films op Letterboxd. Kort na de komst van een mysterieuze Japanner, verspreidt een bizarre infectie zich met gruwelijke gevolgen in het Zuid-Koreaanse bergdorpje Gokseong (de Koreaanse titel van de film). Wat steeds meer op demonische bezetenheid lijkt, gaat het politiepetje te boven van rechercheur Jong-goo. Nogal onbeholpen voert hij het onderzoek in een poging eveneens zijn eigen dochtertje te redden. “Het is begonnen. Je kunt je maar beter schrap zetten”, luidt de onheilspellende boodschap, ook voor de kijker.
In het rijtje regisseurs uit de zogenoemde Korean New Wave sinds de millenniumwisseling is naast de bekendere Park Chan-wook en Bong Joon-ho een ereplaats weggelegd voor Na Hong-jin. Geïnspireerd door de grimmige misdaadthrillers van onder meer William Friedkin en Takeshi Kitano maakte Na Hong-jin internationaal een naam voor zichzelf met ‘The Chaser’ (2008) en ‘The Yellow Sea’ (2010). Zijn derde langspeelfilm en magnum opus ‘The Wailing’ (2016) leverde hem wereldwijd lovende kritieken, de Focus Asia Award op het toonaangevende genrefilmfestival van Sitges en talloze andere prijzen.
Het verhaal is geworteld in het lokale landschap en persoonlijke worstelingen van Na Hong-jin. Na het verlies van meerdere dierbaren keerde de christelijk opgevoede cineast zijn zielenroerselen tot Koreaanse volksreligies en sjamanisme uit Nepal. De lange speelduur versterkt enkel de Shakespeariaanse tragiek in deze sublieme slowburner over angst, geloof (in crisis) en hysterie. Op meesterlijke wijze vermengt Na bovennatuurlijk drama, occultisme en maatschappijkritiek met elementen uit policiers, zombiefilms en zelfs slapstick. Je voelt de invloed op recente horror kruisbestuivingen van Amerikaanse filmmakers als Ari Aster, Jordan Peele en Zach Cregger. Ten tijde van ‘Midsommar’ noemde Aster het zijn favoriete horrorfilm van de afgelopen jaren. Ongezien, onder de huid en onovertroffen is ‘The Wailing’ zoveel meer dan een Koreaanse ‘The Exorcist’.

Kuru concludes the Cult Night autumn season at Studio Skoop with one of the most powerful horror films of the 21st century: ‘The Wailing’, highly ranked in the Top 250 Horror Films on Letterboxd. Shortly after the arrival of a mysterious Japanese man, a bizarre infection spreads with horrific consequences in the South Korean mountain village of Gokseong (the Korean title of the film). What increasingly resembles demonic possession is beyond the capabilities of detective Jong-goo. He clumsily conducts the investigation in an attempt to save his own daughter too. ‘It’s started. You better brace yourself,’ is the ominous message, even for the viewer.
Among the directors of the so-called Korean New Wave since the turn of the millennium, Na Hong-jin holds a place of honour alongside the more well-known Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho. Inspired by the gritty crime thrillers of William Friedkin and Takeshi Kitano, among others, Na Hong-jin made a name for himself internationally with ‘The Chaser’ (2008) and ‘The Yellow Sea’ (2010). His third feature film and magnum opus, The Wailing (2016), earned him worldwide critical acclaim, the Focus Asia Award at the leading genre film festival in Sitges, and countless other awards.
The story is rooted in the local landscape and personal struggles of Na Hong-jin. After losing several loved ones, the Christian-raised filmmaker turned his innermost thoughts to Korean folk religions and Nepalese shamanism. The film’s long runtime only reinforces the Shakespearean tragedy in this sublime slow-burner about fear, (crisis of) faith and hysteria. Na masterfully blends supernatural drama, occultism and social criticism with elements from police procedurals, zombie movies and even slapstick comedies. You can feel the influence on recent horror hybrids by American filmmakers such as Ari Aster, Jordan Peele and Zach Cregger. At the time of ‘Midsommar’, Aster called it his favourite horror film of recent years. Unseen, under the skin and unsurpassed, ‘The Wailing’ is so much more than a Korean ‘The Exorcist’.
