Rol de roodste loper uit, want Kuru presenteert een bonte maar bondige double bill om U tegen te zeggen! En zelfs AAA! Misschien een beetje EUH?! Maar zeker ook OOW! Na de kleurgecodeerde Amerikaanse cultklassieker ‘The Masque of the Red Death’ uit 1964, in 4K gerestaureerd mede door Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation, volgt namelijk Rune Callewaerts gelijknamige kortfilm gebaseerd op hetzelfde verhaal van de befaamde Edgar Allan Poe. Met zijn virtuoze stop-motionversie studeerde Callewaert in 2024 af aan de filmopleiding van het KASK & Conservatorium in Gent en hij is erbij die avond voor een Q&A. Kortom: horror van weleer gecombineerd met vers talent van Belgische bodem!
Het verhaal speelt zich af in middeleeuws Italië. Terwijl een pestepidemie bekend als de Rode Dood zijn hongerige onderdanen teistert, waant de wreedaardige prins Prospero zich veilig in zijn versterkt kasteel. Hij vindt er niks beter op dan een gemaskerd bal te houden voor de lokale adel en belooft extravagant vermaak van de meest perverse plank. Niet onbelangrijk: als gastheer gehoorzaamt hij uitsluitend aan Satan. Nefast voor de feestvreugde of net omgekeerd?
‘The Masque of the Red Death’ (1964) telt als de zevende uit een reeks van acht op zichzelf staande Edgar Allan Poe-adaptaties door de vorig jaar overleden regisseur en producent Roger Corman. De onbetwiste koning van de betere B-film beschouwde het als een van zijn eigen favorieten uit de meer dan 500 films die hij maakte in 70 jaar tijd. Te danken voor de somptueuze cinematografie is Director of Photography Nicolas Roeg, voor hij later zelf als regisseur de symboolwaarde van rood verder zou perfectioneren met ‘Don’t Look Now’ (1973). Reken daarbij nog de onschatbare overgave van de immer spinnende Vincent Price als prins Prospero en het feest is compleet. In dit bloederige bal masqué maken hoge en lage kunst elkaar het hof, net zoals in ‘Blood and Black Lace’ (Kuru Cult Night #10).

The colour-coded 1964 American cult classic ‘The Masque of the Red Death’, restored in 4K with the help of Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation, will be followed by Rune Callewaert’s short film of the same name based on the same story by the renowned Edgar Allan Poe. With his virtuoso stop-motion version, Callewaert graduated from the film course at the KASK & Conservatory in Ghent in 2024, and he will be present that evening for a Q&A. The story is set in medieval Italy. While a plague epidemic known as the Red Death ravages his hungry subjects, the cruel-hearted Prince Prospero believes himself safe in his fortified castle. He thinks of nothing better than to hold a masked ball for the local nobility and promises extravagant entertainment of the most perverse kind. Not unimportant: as a host, he obeys only Satan. Bad news for the festivities or just the opposite?
‘The Masque of the Red Death’ (1964) counts as the seventh in a series of eight stand-alone Edgar Allan Poe adaptations by director and producer Roger Corman, who passed away last year. The undisputed king of the better B-movie considered it one of his own favourites out of the more than 500 films he made in the course of 70 years. Director of Photography Nicolas Roeg is to thank for the sumptuous cinematography, before he would later perfect the symbolic value of red as a director himself with ‘Don’t Look Now’ (1973). Add to that the priceless dedication of the ever-purring Vincent Price as Prince Prospero and the party is complete. In this bloody bal masqué, high and low art court each other, just as in ‘Blood and Black Lace’ (Kuru Cult Night #10).
