Laat het aan de “pope of trash” John Waters om een komedie rond een seriemoordenaar te maken. De slasher van dienst is dan nog een ‘doodgewone’ huisvrouw in een zonovergoten Amerikaanse suburb –hier lijkt geen vuiltje aan de lucht. Achter zowel de façade van diens huisje, tuintje, boompje als de archetypische ‘vrouw aan de haard’ verschanst zich een geweld(ad)ige satire over de bizarre Amerikaanse obsessie met crime!
Homemaker Beverly Sutphin is goedgeefs, -gehumeurd, -lachs… –een som van all things good! Wie echter een ‘sociale regel’ schendt of haar ‘goedbedoelde’ plannen hindert, zal merken dat Beverly’s voorbeeldige imago al snel doorprikt wordt. Een overprotective mom voor haar gezin, een ‘doodgevaarlijk’ persoon tegen wie je best bescherming zoekt voor de ander! Kathleen Turner steelt de show als de immer opgewekte Beverly, en ze verkeert in kleurrijk gezelschap van courante John Waters coryfeeën als Ricki Lake, Mink Stole, Patricia Hearst en Traci Lords.
John Waters zelf stelt dat Serial Mom zijn beste film is: er was een groot productiebudget, voor de eerste keer had hij een echte Hollywoodster te pakken met Kathleen Turner, iedereen had veel fun bij de opnames, het is zijn meest toegankelijke film… Serial Mom wordt gewoonlijk op Moederdag uitgezonden op Amerikaanse tv: aanvankelijk een box office flop, is deze maffe komedie intussen als ‘cult classic’ omhelsd!

Homemaker Beverly Sutphin is good-hearted, -humoured, -natured… -a ‘series’ of all things good! However, anyone who violates a ‘social rule’ or obstructs her ‘well-meaning’ plans will find that Beverly’s exemplary image is soon ‘punctured’. An ‘overprotective mom’ to her family, a ‘deadly’ person against whom it is best to seek protection for the other! Kathleen Turner steals the show as the ever cheerful Beverly, and she is in colourful company with John Waters’ friends as Ricki Lake, Mink Stole, Patricia Hearst and Traci Lords.
John Waters himself states that Serial Mom is his best film: there was a big production budget, for the first time he had a ‘real’ Hollywood star with Kathleen Turner, everyone had a lot of fun at the shoot, the release was a modest success, it is his most ‘broad’ film -the film that can appeal to most… Serial Mom usually airs on Mother’s Day on American TV: initially a box office flop, this wacky comedy has since been embraced as a ‘cult classic’!
