Kurth Kiln Regional Park sits 65km from the city but feels remote — forest, a creek winding through tall fern gullies, wombats, swamp wallabies, and a fully intact WWII-era charcoal kiln! We'll be walking a lovely 4.5km loop following the creek both up and downstream through beautiful native forest. In June the whole place is moody and atmospheric, the creek runs full, and the dogs love every second of it. A proper winter adventure.
Distance: 4.5km loop
Duration: Approximately 1.5–2 hours
Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
Leash rules: On-leash throughout
Café: Gembrook township nearby for a post-walk warm-up
What to expect
The track follows Tomahawk Creek through tall forest and fern gullies with a couple of creek crossings. The dogs will love these! Well-marked and easy to follow, with some gentle hills. Can be muddy and slippery in sections after rain so proper boots are a must. Keep an eye out for wombats and wallabies, they're very active in the cooler months.
What to bring
Sturdy waterproof boots
Warm layers
Water for you and your dog
Lead, poo bags, collar with ID tag
BYO snacks, there's some lovely picnic grounds there
