About this Event
Mixed Metaphors Productions, the two-time Best in the Nest award-winning artist collective that brought you SwimCap and FixaPlate, welcomes you to Kudzu: A Story of Belonging. Pull up a chair, stay a while, and immerse yourself in Kudzu. Find your way home through devised theatre, music, installation art, and facilitated community dialogue.
What does it mean to call Charlotte home? Kudzu: A Story of Belonging explores the intersection of housing justice and home. Welcome to our open house, where you'll encounter your new neighbors, like The Person Packing, who is digging up their roots after being given 30 days to vacate, and The Flipper, who knows how to spot "good bones."
Get ready to step into the story that asks who belongs in Charlotte?
Think MeowWolf with a cause. Dive into the maximalist environment surrounding you, blurring the lines between audience and participant. You don't want to miss this experience that one audience member described as "having the humanity of living on display." Our story will unfold in the dappled sun beneath the vines as displaced Charlotteans create new homes in Kudzu: A Story of Belonging.
In her book belonging, bell hooks asks, “When can we say we truly belong?” Drawing on her theoretical framework Kudzu: A Story of Belonging imagines the future by exploring the nuances of the present housing crisis through the lens of American myth-making. What stories do we tell ourselves about being a Charlottean?
