Kuchipudi Forward by Archana Raja

Evolving from tradition while reaching toward new expression, ‘Kuchipudi Forward’ is an evening of live music and dance by California-based dancer, teacher, and choreographer Archana Raja. Celebrating timeless compositions from the Vempati parampara, the performance pays homage to her lineage and teachers while reimagining the form’s vocabulary through a series of rare, vintage, and contemporary works — a reflection of how Kuchipudi continues to evolve and move forward.  

As Artistic Director of Laya Dance Company, Archana is known for her expressive depth and technical finesse, honed under the guidance of Sri Kasi Aysola. Her repertoire — shaped by performances at Jacob’s Pillow, Nishagandhi Festival, Dancing the Gods (NY), and Krishna Gana Sabha — reflects a deep respect for tradition balanced with a spirit of innovation. This performance brings together her artistic journey, offering a heartfelt exploration of Kuchipudi’s evolution through time, memory, and imagination.
