About this Event
Kotori Kai was established in 2023 as Oregon's inaugural Shamisen School, powered by TAKOHACHI (www.takohachi.org) and guided by Yumi Torimaru (also known as Kotori Oyama). This marks the second annual recital for Kotori Kai Shamisen and TAKOHACHI, featuring special guests such as Kyle Abbott, the founder of the international Shamisen Community, Bachido from California, along with his talented colleagues, including his wife, Su Benjamin. Also, we are planning on having a special performance by a surprise guest musician. TBA!
The recital is available for FREE or on a Donation basis and is partially supported by the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC) through the Art3c Grant. It will take place at the Rose City Park Presbyterian Church in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday, November 16, 2024. Doors will open at 2 PM, with the performance commencing at 2:30 PM. Please note that only street parking is accessible, and the Hollywood Farmers Market will be adjacent to the venue until 2 PM. We encourage you to arrive early to secure a parking spot.
This event showcases the beauty and intricacies of Shamisen music and powerful taiko drums and fosters a sense of community and cultural exchange. With the success of this year's recital, Kotori Kai is excited to continue building a vibrant Shamisen community in Oregon and beyond, inspiring both current and future generations of musicians.
