TUESDAY 17:00 - 19:00 for 10 weeks

Course Dates: Tuesday 8, 15, 22, 29 October; 5, 12, 19, 26 November; 3, 10 December 2024

Course Delivery: This is a blended learning class which will consist of a weekly 2 hour in person class together with supporting resources. These resources will include a 5-10 minute preparation video, focusing on a relevant language teaching point to the upcoming class and 30 minutes of online exercises to follow up on teaching in the online class. You will be expected to watch the video and complete the online exercises ahead of each weekly class. Online classes will be delivered using Microsoft Teams and will be limited to a maximum of 20 students. These classes are being designed to be interactive and engaging.

Learning Objectives: Students taking the level 4 course should either have completed level 3, or be familiar with frequently used vocabulary and have a strong beginner’s knowledge of the language. The aim of level 4 is to build upon a solid beginner’s knowledge of the language and improve their ability to express themselves, constructing more complex sentences making use of new grammatical points such as giving reasons, permissions/ prohibitions and comparison. Students will also enhance their cultural awareness through class discussion.

2 Hospital: Explaining where it hurts; ‘ㅡ’ irregular verbs/adjectives; Asking about symptoms;Frequent expression of symptoms

3 Hospital Giving a reason A/V –(으)니까; Reason Connective ending -아서/어서 Vs -니까/으니까

4 Hospital Expressing prohibitions; Negative imperative form V+지 마세요; Describing symptoms and causes of sickness

5 Etiquette Asking/giving permissions ‘May I ~’; Cf) Should/ ought to/ must; Prohibition V (으)면 안 돼요; Saying ‘Excuse me’, ‘No’ politely

6 Etiquette When (to describe general occasions); Different manners in different countries; Korean manners

7 Advice & Suggestions ; N is good/bad for N (person/animal); N is good/bad for N (thing); Polite suggestion/recommendation ending

8 Advice & Suggestions Asking ‘Are you alright?’; Suggesting something ‘-는 게 어때요?’; ‘ㄹ’ irregular verbs/adjectives

9 Shopping; Buying something at a store; Frequent adjectives; Modifying adjectives (으)ㄴ+N; Colours

10 Shopping; Combining two sentences into one -고-; Exchanging something; Comparing two things N보다 (더) A; Replacing a repeated word with ‘거’; Expressions related to wearing

Learning outcomes: Students will have developed a post-beginner’s vocabulary in the topic areas outlined above which should give them the confidence to hold a conversation in the language. Students will understand frequently used words and phrases. Students will be able to formulate sentences and ask simple questions. Students will be able to formulate sentences


FAQs

Is there a minimum age to register for a Language Centre course?

You must be a minimum of 18 years old to register for an in person course and a minimum of 16 years old to register for any on-line Language Centre course.

What are the course fees?

There are different fees depending on registration type. All course fees are payable on enrolment. --Student fee: £20.00 --Staff fee: £20.00 --General Public: £88.00

Are these courses accredited?

A Queen's Certificate will be awarded to all students who attend regularly. A minimum of 70% attendance is required for certification.

In addition any current Queen's student can apply for Degree Plus accreditation. Degree Plus enables students to gain recognition from Queen’s for completing extra-curricular work related learning alongside their degree.

Most students gain Degree Plus by completing a Provider Verified Activity (Formerly Route A). It is also possible to gain recognition for more than one student led activity by submitting a Combined Experience Application (Formerly Route B).

Employers are looking for graduates who can demonstrate that they have the skills needed for workplace success – the Degree Plus Award will help you do this! For further information please see , Degree Plus .

How often do I attend?

Classes, which usually last 2 hours, are held weekly, as far as possible outside normal university teaching hours (e.g. late afternoon, early evening, some are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon) and run for 10 weeks starting in October, January and April . You will also be expected to complete homework ahead of class.

Is my registration fee transferrable?

Yes, if you feel after your first class that the level of language is too high/low, you can transfer to another class, provided that there is available space.

What's the refund policy?

All refunds before the start of the course must be requested in writing. Refunds are paid as follows:

Semester 1 (Please note EVENTBRITE will charge 6% administration fee on all refunds)

Before (and including) 25 September– full refund

26 September to 3 October (inclusive) – 50% refund

No refunds available from 4 October (inclusive)

All requests for refunds need to be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion. All refunds, where agreed, will be subject to an administrative fee of £10.00 for QUB staff and students and £40 for members of the public.
