About this Event
KOLO KINO CINEMA CLUB: screenings & conversations with filmmakers, by candlelight.
We invite you to join us on May 27 at 19:30 for a screening of Match in a Haystack, a documentary film directed by five-time Emmy winner Joe Hill, following the creation of the contemporary dance performance Cossachka in Ukraine during the first years of the war, amidst air raid sirens, blackouts, and the realities of war.
When Russia invaded, the women of Ukraine’s leading contemporary dance group struggled to find purpose in their work. A search for resistance ultimately led them back to dance.
The film documents the work of director Yuliia Lopata, choreographer and Procontemporary founder Halyna Pekha, and the dancers of the Procontemporary collective as they continued rehearsing and creating despite the ongoing invasion. Produced by Dangerous Company in collaboration with Vice News, the film also features American ballerina Misty Copeland among its producers, with an original score by Ukrainian-American composer Katya Richardson.
Cossachka takes its name from an alternative term associated with the Amazons — semi-mythical women warriors believed to have once lived on the territory of present-day Ukraine. The performance explores the journey of a woman warrior, intertwining mythology with the contemporary reality of Ukrainian women who choose to serve and defend their country today.
This film is dedicated to Volodymyr Rakov, who was killed while the team was working on the project. In his memory, this screening is also an opportunity to raise funds in support of his battalion and those who continue defending Ukraine today.
By attending and supporting the screening, you directly contribute to this effort and help sustain the people and communities resisting the war.
Language: Ukrainian with English subtitles.
Entry by donation.
