Kokedama Workshop: Create Your Own Living Art

Join the UF / IFAS Extension Collier County Master Gardener Volunteers for a hands‑on botanical workshop where you’ll craft your own kokedama — a beautiful Japanese moss‑ball planter that brings nature and artistry together.

Discover the joy of creating an original moss‑covered presentation using herbs, houseplants, vines, or grasses.

Kokedama comes from the Japanese words koke (moss) and dama (ball). This traditional garden art form uses a moss‑wrapped soil sphere as a natural planter that can be displayed on a dish or suspended for a floating garden effect. During this workshop, you’ll learn how to build, style, and care for your kokedama so it thrives long after the event.

UF/IFAS Extension Collier County Master Gardener Volunteers will guide you step‑by‑step through:

• Choosing the right plant

• Forming and wrapping your moss ball

• Styling your kokedama for display

• Tips for long‑term care and maintenance

Whether you're a seasoned gardener or brand‑new to plant crafts, this indoor workshop is a fun, social way to connect with nature and express your creative side.

💲 Supply Fee = $30 per participant

Your materials fee supports Collier County Master Gardener Volunteer projects, including:

• Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ education

• Youth and community outreach

• Demonstration gardens and local environmental programs

Plant options that will be offered will be limited to Pothos, Spider plant, and Peperomia. If you prefer to bring your own plant, bring any of the following plants (2” or smaller pots/plugs).

Suitable plants include:

· Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) – Golden, marble queen, neon

• Philodendron (heart‑leaf types)
• Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) – Including variegated
• Ferns – Boston, maidenhair (for more advanced), rabbit’s foot
• Peperomia – Watermelon, obtusifolia, ripple
• Fittonia (nerve plant)
• Syngonium (arrowhead vine)
• Baby tears (Soleirolia)
• English ivy (Hedera helix)

🌿 Herbs That Work Well

These are great for kitchen kokedama and have manageable root systems:

• Mint
• Oregano
• Thyme
• Lemon balm
• Parsley

(No woody herbs like rosemary or lavender — they don’t love the moisture.)

🌼 Small Houseplants That Thrive in Kokedama

• Peace lily (small varieties)
• Anthurium
• Dracaena compacta
• Small palms (parlor palm, cat palm)
• Begonias – Cane or rex types

🌾 Grasses & Vines

These add movement and texture:

• Mondo grass
• Creeping fig (Ficus pumila)

• Bring your apron from home and your special plant, if desired.
