Knives in Hens by David Harrower is a stark, poetic drama set in a pre-industrial, rural village—a world steeped in superstition, isolation, and rigid social roles. At its heart is a young woman, unnamed and uneducated, tethered to her husband, Pony William, a ploughman who embodies the harsh, masculine rhythms of agrarian life. Her world is defined by labor, silence, and obedience.
The play explores her awakening—intellectual, emotional, and existential—through encounters with the village miller, a man shunned and feared by the community. Though she’s taught to despise him, the miller introduces her to the power of language and the act of naming, which becomes a gateway to self-discovery. As she begins to articulate her thoughts and desires, the boundaries of her world shift, and she starts to question the truths she’s been handed.
