Quentin Tarantino celebrates his 60th birthday this month, so it’s time for a bloody party! The Cinémathèque presents the celebrated auteur’s fourth film, ???? ????, as a blood-drenched double bill. Originally conceived and shot as a single work, this diptych was inspired by Japanese samurai, yakuza and martial arts films – including Toshiya Fujita’s 1973 manga adaptation ???? ????????? – as well as other grindhouse favourites. This story of the revenge of Uma Thurman’s Bride is so epic, it couldn’t be contained in a single film. And what better way to throw a party than with a deadly Japanese sword?
