KLIFFS is a Berlin-based duo consisting of two Canadians: Mark Bérubé (guitar, keys, vocals) and Kristina Koropecki (cello, synthesizer, vocals). The two met sixteen years ago in an improvised rehearsal room in Montreal when Kristina joined Mark's solo project. The two toured extensively throughout Canada and Europe with Mark's band and eventually moved to Berlin, Germany, in 2014. After a brief hiatus to pursue other projects, the two reunited as a duo in 2018 under the new name KLIFFS and released their debut album, Temporary Cures, in November 2019. You may have seen them playing throughout Europe in recent years in the bands of Agnes Obel (Kristina) or Sophie Hunger (Mark).
Their albums have been nominated for a Western Canada Music Award, a Canadian Folk Music Award, and a GAMIQ (Québec) award in the past, and they have played some of the biggest festivals and stages in Canada and Europe, such as the Montreal Jazz Festival, Paléo (Switzerland), Printemps du Bourges Festival (France), L'Olympia (Paris, France), Xjazz Festival (Berlin, Germany), and the Vancouver Folk Festival, to name a few. At the Printemps du Bourges Festival, they won the ""Prix du Jury"" in 2014 as part of the ""Les Inouïs"" showcase. Their latest album ""after the flattery"" (KLIFFS) was released in early 2023 and was hailed by the German national newspaper SPIEGEL as ""So flattering and beautifully done that it leaves you flabbergasted.""
Geographically speaking, they make music from Montreal to Berlin, a form of synth-folk: one foot in the tradition of songwriting, one foot in today's world of synths and electronic sounds. Musically, they compose songs that are best suited for late-night bike rides downtown and shy dancers. Lyrically, they write recycled sound poems that deal with the thoughts of the eternally confused and the intensity of earthquakes.
