?About Sonja KikiZomba:
As a first-generation instructor, Sonja KikiZomba looks back at more than a decade in the international Kizomba scene.
Previously a ballroom and Salsa dancer, she first fell in love with the dance in 2006 during her studies in Coimbra, Portugal and was asked to start teaching Kizomba in 2011. As a solo instructor with nobody around knowing the dance, she was forced early on to focus on leaders and followers alike. This made her known mostly as a female leader which was unusual for the scene at the time.
Sonja's love for the roots of Kizomba, her enthusiastic teaching method, and precise explanations has so far taken her to over 20 countries across 4 continents, teaching at major high-quality events such as LIKE festival Portugal, Luxembourg Kizomba Festival, MBKF Miami, Sawa Sawa Washington and many more.
Over the years Sonja has been appointed to the Jury of different Kizomba competitions in Germany, Belgium, the United States, and Central America. In 2014 Sonja took up DJ-ing in order to provide the scene with more authentic music. The same year Sonja KikiZomba was awarded for preserving and promoting Angolan culture in Belgium.
Today many previous students, assistants, and partners have grown into becoming Kizomba teachers themselves and continue to share the knowledge and passion with an ever growing public.
Complementary to the devotion for the dance, Sonja also followed her academic interest in linguistics and politics. She holds a master in Lusitanistics which allowed for a thorough insight into the languages and cultures of the Lusophone world. Understanding both Cape Verdean Kreol and Angolan Slang later proved precious for a wholistic pedagogical approach in Kizomba. She dedicated her post grad thesis to the economic and political transformation of Angola after the end of the civil war. Her determination to deeply understand Angolan culture led her to travel across the country in 2014 and again in 2016 for further investigation.
