Taking place during the regular 11:00am mass, the Kirkin (a Scottish word meaning to bring to Church,) involves the presentation and blessing of the tartans of clans, regions, or regiments. Tradition has it that the custom started after the English banned wearing of tartans in Scotland in 1746. In protest, the Scots wore a concealed bit of tartan to church one Sunday each year and at a certain point in the service, all touched the tartan while the minister pronounced a blessing.
