Kira Kira is a project formed by Satoko Fujii, Natsuki Tamura and Alister Spence in response to a commission from Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2017. Fujii, Tamura and Spence have performed together regularly in duo, trio, quartet and large ensemble settings since Fujii’s Ma-Do quartet and Spence’s trio first shared the stage at the 2008 Tokyo Jazz Festival.
The premier performance of Kira Kira at MIJF2017 featured Satoko Fujii on piano, Natsuki Tamura trumpet, Alister Spence fender rhodes electric piano, and Tony Buck drums. The performance was hailed by Roger Mitchell in AusJazz as ‘an absolute triumph,’ and ‘the highlight of this festival.’
A second performance by Kira Kira took place in in the Knuttelhouse club in Tokyo in September 2017, this time with extraordinary Japanese drummer Ittetsu Takemura. A recording of this performance was released on Fujii’s Libra label in April 2018 as a CD ‘Bright Force.’ This album has received consistently strong reviews world-wide.

Critics and fans alike hail pianist and composer Satoko Fujii as one of the most original voices in jazz today. She’s ‘a virtuoso piano improviser, an original composer and a bandleader who gets the best collaborators to deliver,’ says John Fordham in The Guardian.
In concert and on more than 80 albums as a leader or co-leader, she synthesizes jazz, contemporary classical, avant-rock and Japanese folk music into an innovative music instantly recognizable as hers alone.
Over the years, Fujii has led some of the most consistently creative ensembles in modern improvised music, including the ma-do quartet, the Min-Yoh Ensemble, and an electrifying avant-rock quartet featuring drummer Tatsuya Yoshida of The Ruins.

Pianist and composer Alister Spence is one of the most creative forces in jazz and improvised music in Australia. The Alister Spence Trio with Lloyd Swanton (the Necks) and Toby Hall (Mike Nock trio, Sandy Evans Trio) has enjoyed critical acclaim both nationally and internationally, being nominated twice for Best Australian Jazz Album at the ARIA Awards (2004/2007). The trio’s CD, Not Everything but Enough was voted in ‘Top 10 Jazz Albums 2017’ in Music Magazine, Japan, and received ‘Honorary Mention, Best of 2017’ in the New York City Jazz Record.
