About this Event

Join us for an informative King’s Bariatric Study Day aimed at expanding your knowledge of the different types of bariatric surgeries and the intricacies of inpatient care.


This event will cover the dietary requirements of bariatric patients and the collaborative care approach necessary for their treatment.


Participants will receive a comprehensive overview of current surgical interventions for obesity, including discussions on the long-term outcomes and potential complications associated with these procedures, as well as their management.


Additionally, the training will offer valuable guidance on the perioperative and nutritional care specific to bariatric surgical patients.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for nurses who are looking to improve their understanding of weight bias, how it affects treatment of patients, what causes obesity and weight management methods. Attendees will learn how to identify post-op complications and raising awareness about how to manage them.

This course is suitable for all nurses (including nurse associates), health care assistance and nursing students.

Overview of the King’s Bariatric Course:

The course consists of one day study day, in-person training in South London at the King’s Academy kings-academy.org

The day will consist of presentations, clinical scenarios and group discussions, making an engaging learning experience.

Course Highlights:

This course delivers comprehensive training that illuminates how bariatric patients may face complications in healthcare. Key elements of the course include:

  • Extensive Curriculum: Detailed instruction covering all aspects of bariatric care, including surgical treatment of obesity, diet and nutrition after surgery, obesity and mental health, pharmacotherapy and clinical scenarios.
  • Focus on Safety and Compliance: Emphasis on safe practice standards and adherence to care protocols, essential for ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes.
  • Instruction by Experts: Courses led by experienced healthcare educators who are committed to enhancing your clinical skills, building confidence, and ensuring you provide the highest standard of care.
  • Hear first-hand experience of weight-bias: Understanding the impact from a bariatric patient who has faced stigma will allow attendees to empathise with them
  • Better Communication: to become more confident to raise the topic of weight with patients appropriately
  • Treatments Currently Available: To be aware of the different weight loss treatments available and introduce the weight management treatment in the different healthcare settings

· Your will be presented with a Certificate of Completion, valid for two years

Introduce the weight management treatment in the different healthcare settings.

To inform regarding the inpatient and lifelong after care of patients after bariatric surgery.

• Be confident to care for a post op bariatric patient in any health care setting.

Diet and nutrition after surgery

Info: Aim:
To inform regarding the nutritional needs of bariatric patients.

Learning Outcomes:
• To understand the different diet stages the patients need to go through.
• To understand the unique nutritional needs and restrictions patients face after bariatric surgery.

Obesity and mental health

Info: Aim:
To raise awareness regarding the prevalence of mental health problems in people living with obesity and explain the role of psychological treatments in pre- and post-operative management.

Learning Outcomes:
• To understand how the rewarding food stimuli is affecting obesity and treatment of it.
• To understand the most important aspects of psychological assessment and pre-operative optimisation prior to bariatric surgery.

Pharmacotherapy

To educate regarding the available non-surgical treatments of obesity.
