Kingman Island Family Day Activities:

Anacostia Green Boats: Do you want to explore Kingman Lake on the water and help keep our river clean? Guided by Living Classrooms paddling staff, participants will partner up and paddle on Kingman Lake in search of trash. Participants will be provided with basic instructions, gloves, and trash grabbers. After about 30 minutes in the water, return to shore to sort and learn about what you collected. No paddling experience required! Age requirement: 4 years and older.

Island Info Table:
Do you want to learn about the current and future plans for Kingman and Heritage Islands? Want to share your thoughts and feedback? Over the next three years, DOEE and our design-build team, led by MCN Build, Hickok Cole Architects OvS Landscape Architecture, and Sarver Ecological, will design and construct improvements on Kingman + Heritage Islands to prioritize restoration and conservation of the natural ecology with a focus on educational opportunities for visitors of all ages. Stop by and learn more!

Meadow Exploration: Ever wonder what species are thriving in the Kingman Meadow? Come explore this exciting ecosystem using nets and hand lenses to observe some of the smaller inhabitants up close. Living Classrooms guides will be available to help you along your journey of discovery!

Gyotaku Fish Printing: Have you heard of gyotaku fish printing? It's a technique used by Japanese anglers before cameras were invented to record the fish they caught! Learn about the fish that reside in the District and use rubber fish molds, paints, brushes and rollers to create a replica or a funky, one-of-a-kind multicolored fish. ,

Meet a Freshwater Mussel:
Meet the mussels! You will have the opportunity to meet some of the native freshwater mussels who call the Anacostia River home. See the power of mussels in actions through a filtration demonstration and making your own clay model.

Nature Walk, Yoga, & Meditation:
Need a moment of relaxation and recharge? Want to stretch and recuperate? Join us for a guided 30-minute session which includes a short walk, gentle yoga, and meditation. Sessions are at 11:00 am, 12:00 pm, and 1:00 pm.

Planting Demonstration:
Curious about the restoration projects on the Islands? Do you want to see what a space will look like 5-7 years from now? Join us for a planting demonstration with more mature plants led by the Living Classrooms staff.

Tree Bingo & Scavenger Hunt:

Want to learn why trees are so important in the District? Join Casey Trees who will have various activities for all ages, including a youth Tree Bingo Game, a scavenger hunt using the tree guide we created for Kingman & Heritage Islands, basic tips for tree ID using the Casey Trees Species Guide and prizes! Talk to us about what we do in the city and how you can get free trees for your yard or community.

Watershed Simulation Model:
Are you curious about what causes storm water runoff and flooding in the city? Join us to use a large scale model to create, test, and visualize how this happens within the District. Work as a team to find and test solutions to a variety of watershed and floodplain problems simulated by the model.
