On Friday, May 30th and Saturday, May 31st, join us for a collective “Whoa” when we all hail KING KEANU with two nights of Reevestastic 35mm double features featuring one of our favorite Canadian imports!Like a cool breeze over the mountains, Keanu Reeves has graced the screen in a myriad of roles for 40 years. Whether you know him as Ted, Johnny, Jack, Neo, or Ortiz The Dog Boy, the Mahoning Drive-In Theater celebrates the work of Keanu Reeves with four of his biggest hits.
On Friday, May 30th, we kick things off with the genre-exploding sci-fi/action masterpiece by The Wachowskis, THE MATRIX (1999)! Featuring Keanu as Neo, a simple office worker who finds that the world around him is not what he seems, pops a pill and sets out to save the world with guts, guns, and Kung Fu, THE MATRIX was a blockbuster that blew minds in the late 90s and introduced the world to “bullet time”. With Carrie-Anne Moss, Lawrence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving and Joe Pantoliano!
We stay in the world of cyber intrigue for our second feature, featuring Mr. Reeves as JOHNNY MNEMONIC (1995), a digital courier with vital information implanted in his brain, who must race against time and fight for his life as he’s pursued by assailants who want the information at any cost. Will he complete his mission and save the internet? Or will he lose his head? Featuring Dina Meyer, Ice T, Takeshi Kitano, Henry Rollins, Dolph Lundgren and Udo Kier!
Saturday, May 31st sees Keanu fighting crime on land, sea and air, staring off with him as an FBI agent infiltrating a group of surfer dude bank robbers in Kathryn Bigelow’s POINT BREAK (1991)! Co-starring Patrick Swayze, Gary Busey, Lori Petty, and John C. McGinley, this is one of the top action films of the 90s, one we’ve long wanted to bring to the giant Mahoning screen!
If you thought we’d be slowing down for our final feature, we’re just getting up to SPEED (1994)! Here Keanu is an L.A. S.W.A.T. officer who boards a bus bound for oblivion, being steered by unlucky commuter Sandra Bullock. Why doesn’t she just hit the brakes? You see, it’s not so simple. If she lets the bus roll below 50MPH, the explosives aboard will detonate, due to devious Dennis Hopper’s evil plan! A slam-bang adrenaline-fueled crowd pleaser from director Jan de Bont, SPEED is our way of ending this celebration of King Keanu with a BANG!
