Kinfolk: A Juneteenth Block Party

A Juneteenth community-focused block party curating immersive experiences, activations, and a marketplace, celebrating the beauty of blackness and emphasizing diversity, bridging the gap in representation by creating an inclusive space for black individuals, creatives, and entrepreneurs. Kinfolk is where Black history and Afro-Futurism meet us in Oak Cliff to celebrate.

We're celebrating the rich history of Juneteenth and honoring Opal Lee, whose 2016 march from Fort Worth, TX to Washington, D.C. helped make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday.

Black people are notoriously enterprising, inventive, and masters of craftsmanship and marketing. Blackness is synonymous with labor and work, but the racial wealth gap looms large. Kinfolk champions entrepreneurial equity by curating a market of black brands and businesses. Black wealth starts with consumers spending at Black-owned businesses. We celebrate the spirit of overcoming, bootstrapping, problem-solving, and ingenuity while building meaningful connections.

Food is a central part of the Black ancestral legacy. Kinfolk will feature barbeque, vegan, comfort, beverage, spirits, and dessert vendors on-site to feed literal appetites and those hungry to connect present-day food traditions with diasporic pasts. The marketplace is consumerism as a cultural alliance and representation to inspire future owners.

Activations and experiences are essential for creativity and resilience; thus, Black joy is not a luxury; it's essential. Archiving the Black experience from the Black perspective is critical. Kinfolk is an intentionally curated, safe, family-friendly place for liberation, delight, and play.

To define Kinfolk on our terms, the fest will highlight Black artists of varying mediums and host a chalk and games space for little ones and the kids at heart: adult attendees can engage with dominoes table, checkers, large-scale Jenga, cards, dice, and uno.

Given that the Kinfolk event will coincide with Father's Day, we are curating a variety of unique activations and experiences to celebrate the occasion. This includes complimentary margaritas, photographic mementos from our photo booth, and specially designed Father's Day merch from Huemane® & Daily®.

A fest without music is just a gathering. Celebrating Black joy and Black liberation requires dancing. American music is Black, always celebrating Black style, fashion, grace, joy, and love. Musical guests will include popular disc jockeys playing various black music, inviting attendees to explore Black contributions to American music and put names to distinctly Black practices like call and response. Across the diaspora, we use music to communicate, inform, and shape culture. Even when words fail us, the drum does not.
