The young witch Kiki has just turned 13, which by tradition means it’s time for her to, Rumspringa-like, enter the wider world and spend a year finding out whether she’s able to live on her own. Setting off with her talking black cat, Jiji, she brilliantly uses her broom-flying skills to establish a successful delivery service. But her magical powers rely on her determination and confidence. In such a strange, new situation, what happens when she begins to doubt herself?
Director Hayao Miyazaki, long-time visionary head of Tokyo animation house Studio Ghibli, simply does not miss. Kiki’s Delivery Service, loosely based on a popular children’s picaresque novel of the same name, finds him just beginning to hit his peak as a creative force. His meticulous attention to detail and his deeply felt empathy for both his characters and his audience are all on their fullest display.
