About this Event

Free Range Chemistry – No Added Chemicals

Many people associate the word ‘chemicals' with evil, man-made substances. This action-packed demonstration lecture features flashes and bangs made only from the chemicals that can be found in nature, illustrating the fact that our whole world is made of chemicals.

How can copper be extracted from a semiprecious stone? What acid can be made from fools’ gold? How can the scrapings from the walls of a cow shed cause an explosion?

All these questions and more will be answered in this talk by Professor Peter Wothers.

Expect loud bangs!

Meet the chemist

Professor Peter Wothers is a Teaching Fellow in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, and a Fellow and Director of Studies in Chemistry at St Catharine’s College.

Peter is keen to promote chemistry to young and old, and for over 20 years his exciting and informative lectures have been a highlight of Chemistry Open Day.
