About this Event
In this February session of Saturday Art Lab, children will explore self-portraiture as a way to tell their own story. Inspired by artists such as Frida Kahlo and contemporary portrait artists, kids will learn how artists use color, symbols, and expression to show who they are and what matters to them.
We’ll begin by learning about the artist’s life and creative process, discussing how self-portraits can reflect emotions, interests, culture, and personal experiences. Children will be guided to observe facial features while also thinking beyond realism — exploring how color, pattern, and meaningful symbols can represent identity in imaginative ways.
During the hands-on studio time, kids will create a mixed-media self-portrait, incorporating drawing, painting, and collage. They’ll be encouraged to include elements that feel personal, such as favorite colors, animals, places, or activities, building both technical skills and confidence in self-expression.
The session closes with a reflection and share circle, where children can talk about their artwork, the choices they made, and what they learned about themselves and others through the creative process.
