About this Event

Kids ages 6–10 can join MOCA Educators for fun and engaging art activities inspired by a monthly theme. Projects creatively explore STEAM topics and include interactive elements that participants can take home. Each session takes place on VyStar Free Saturdays, and families are encouraged to explore the galleries for free while visiting.

Join us for Kids Art Lab on the second Saturday of each month!

MONTHLY THEMES

May 9 Perfectly Imperfect Ceramics

Develop basic skills of hand-building ceramics with the addition of learning about kintsugi. With the help of instructors, students will make a set of air-dry clay dishes, including a cup, bowl, and plate. Using score-and-scratch tools, they will shape and assemble their pieces, then decorate them with golden glue, resembling the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with something new and delightful.

Jun 13 Claymation Station

Learn character design tips that will help with creating your own claymation subject. Students will first practice drawing their own character idea, using prompts and suggestions from their instructors, and will then handcraft their charcaters with a wired armature, before molding the exterior with colored polymer clay.

Jul 11 Summertime Sandcastles

Enjoy the start of summertime with a guided art activity at MOCA. Students and instructors will craft miniature sandcastles using kids’ kinetic sand and other colorful building materials. Participants will experiment with different interpretations and styles to design their own one-of-a-kind structures.

Aug 8 Zany Zen Gardens

Discover something zany and unreal in this miniature zen garden activity! Zen gardens are usually calm places for meditation, but in this garden, something unusual has grown instead of the usual bonsai tree. As the designer of this wonderfully weird garden, you’ll imagine and create the strange and silly things growing from the branches of your clay tree!

If you have a disability and require an accommodation for this occasion, please contact MOCA Jacksonville at 904-620-1214 or [email protected] five days before the event to enable us to provide you with a reasonable accommodation for the event.

About MOCA

Located in the heart of historic Downtown, the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville is one of the city’s most significant cultural assets. As the oldest art museum in Northeast Florida and one of the first contemporary art museums to be established in the United States, MOCA is focused on promoting the discovery, knowledge, and advancement of the art, artists, and ideas of our time.

Among the most prominent contemporary art museums in the Southeast, MOCA’s exhibitions and programs set the pace for arts and art-integrated programming on a regional and national stage. Renowned in this community, MOCA casts the spotlight on Jacksonville as a burgeoning, vital arts destination.

The museum is also a cornerstone of Jacksonville’s multibillion-dollar downtown revitalization plan with exhibitions and programs that bring new visitors to the civic core during the day, at night, and on weekends.
