Art Steps is a series of creative making activities produced by artists for children to enjoy with family and friends.
In this Art Steps program, artist Lindy Lee invites us into the world of Ouroboros through paper cutting and light and shadow play. Ouroboros by Lindy Lee is an immersive, public sculpture on display in the National Gallery forecourt.
'I like to think about the shadow and light of the sculpture as matter and spirit. The matter is the solidity of the stainless steel, the spirit is the way the light and shade shift and change.'

This activity is designed for children aged 5 to 12. Younger siblings are welcome to join. All children must be accompanied by a parent/carer. Bookings essential for all children and adults.

About the artist
Lindy Lee was born in 1954 in Meanjin/Brisbane. Her grandparents and parents emigrated to Australia from China’s Guangdong province, and this cultural heritage was to have a profound impact on her art. She now lives and works in the Byron Bay hinterland in New South Wales.
Consistent influences on Lee’s practice include Taoism and Zen Buddhism. A practising Buddhist since the early 1990s, Lee says that ‘Zen practice directs me to something fundamental about being, which is that we are constantly in flux and change’. This sense of transition, malleability and impermanence is reflected in her contemporary work, in which delicate perforations are singed into metal and paper.
