To celebrate Earth Science Week, The Katy Rock Shop is hosting its first ever Earth Science Day!
Many have enjoyed our Thursday classes that include gem mining. ⛏️ This will be a all new experience that will include a scavenger hunts, hands-on rock tumbling, rock cutting and polishing and half a dozen experiments! 🧫
We are TeK aligned for k-12 and the course was developed and will be lead by MSc graduate from Rice University, in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.
Price: $20 per class / $60 for all 4.

Kinder through 2nd will learn observation and investigation. This Fundamentals class includes: Magnifying glass, observation texture, density, color and composition. We will also include Light in action! The group will go on a scavenger hunt at the end and with a prize for who finds all!
Rock and mineral identification 2nd -12th takes includes Critical Concepts: like rock versus mineral, atoms, bonds, hardness, streak and density. The will learn the method to identify a mineral in the field with Moh’s hardness testing
Rock cutting and polishing class will require a waiver for participants to enjoy this class. Kids will be introduced to Lapidary with hands on polishing and cutting!
Last class is fossils and lithification with career development for 6th -12th grade. - [ ] career development: how rock forms, Dino’s get preserved, layers get created and geologic time. **WARNING** please be aware we will discuss the age of the Earth and geologic time. We will make fossils, show how sedimentary layers deposit, how crystals grow, demonstrate super saturation in action, and the impact of temperature and pressure.
