About California Youth Karate Club, Inc.
Founded in 1994 by Hugo M. Rojas II, California Youth Karate Club, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of young people through martial arts. Our mission is rooted in service: to provide no-to-low-cost karate instruction to students in schools and communities across Southern California. We’re currently in Hawthorne School District, Ontario Montclair S.D. & Masonic Lodge, Redondo Beach, Ca.
The organization began humbly in Mr. Rojas’s garage in Hawthorne, California, where he offered free karate lessons to local boys and girls ages 4 to 17. In return, he asked only for commitment—good grades in school and positive behavior at home. What started with just five students soon grew to nearly fifty as families across the community learned about the program’s supportive environment and its emphasis on character development. Parents often stayed to watch, and the reputation of the program continued to spread.
As the program flourished, Hawthorne City Mayor Larry Guidi took notice and expressed interest in supporting Mr. Rojas’s efforts. With his help, the program expanded beyond the garage to additional locations, including the YMCA, Hawthorne Parks and Recreation, and Bodger Park. These partnerships paved the way for what would eventually become California Youth Karate Club.
For over 30 years, CYKC has specialized in working with children from marginalized, underserved, and special needs backgrounds. We’ve partnered with school districts, community centers, and youth organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club and YMCA to provide structured karate programs that go far beyond physical training. Every class is intentionally designed to build confidence, respect, discipline, and resilience—skills that students carry with them throughout life.
To give you a glimpse of our impact, we’ve included videos and clips of our karate kids in action. These young athletes embody the spirit of perseverance and community that CYKC has fostered for over three decades:
