In light of recent vitriol levelled against outgoing prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, we are holding a rally in the Octagon, Dunedin, on Saturday 4th March at 2pm, to show our love and support for our former PM and all women in politics. This will be an inclusive event, all men, women and people who wish to be involved are welcome.
We hope to keep this positive and upbeat. The aim of the rally is to show our love, support and respect for outgoing Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and for all women in politics. We may be heckled by haters and a police presence has been organised for everyone's protection. We urge all participants to remain respectful.
There will be speakers from Dunedin City Council, Otago University (Political Science Dept) and MPs. This rally has arisen in response to the intense vitriol that some groups have shown towards former PM Ardern. We want to support healthy dialogue and inclusion of all people in politics and discussion of issues, not vitriolic attacks on an individual.
Recently a man in Whangārei stood publicly with placards showing his support for Ms Ardern. He received some hatred and abuse, but also a lot of support. I considered doing this alone, but my husband was concerned that, as a female, my safety would be compromised. This, in turn, got me thinking about gender equality, both in politics and in society. For a country which gave the right to vote to women in 1893, first in the world, it is astonishing that so many double standards still exist. The recent vitriol heaped on our former PM was a sad, misogynistic commentary on how women are still treated with much more hatred than men who take up the same leadership roles.
Unfortunately, the haters have raised their voices very loudly and with great viciousness. This will be our voice, raised with dignity.
