KGS Annual Seminar: Powering Kentucky's Future

The 2026 annual seminar will focus on Kentucky’s energy outlook, highlighting recent geoscience research in hydrogen, critical minerals, oil and gas, and environmental management.

Our keynote speaker is the Executive Director of the Kentucky Office of Energy Policy, Kenya Stump, who will present a review of Kentucky’s current energy infrastructure, the challenges, and opportunities of the energy landscape, and potential new energy sources.

The innovative KGS projects discussed include investigations into: the potential for geologic hydrogen plays in serpentized mafic rocks and other subsurface environments, rare earth elements in igneous intrusion of western Kentucky, methane emissions from orphaned oil and gas wells, radiological sites in Kentucky, and the potential for AI tools to gather critical data from oil and gas well documents.

In addition to research presentations, participants can choose from three hands-on workshops: practical application of Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) landslide data for mitigation planning, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for beginners, or geological hydrogen exploration using rock cores.

A light breakfast and boxed lunches will be provided during the morning sessions at the Jacobson Science Building.
