On Wednesday, 5/8, Nrityarpana School of Performing Arts invites you to the KENWOOD Theatre for a special showing of GENIUS MUTTA (2024) including a Meet The Director discussion.
About the film: A children's film, Genius Mutta is a heartwarming story of a young boy of limited means with a dream. It is a story of talent, its nurture by mentors and community and a reminder that talent knows no color, status, and gender.
Additional APPI film showings include:
MARVELOUS AND THE BLACK HOLE (2021) – Sunday 5/5 at the KENWOOD Theatre, presented by Asian Community Alliance including a post-film discussion led by a group of local Asian American high school students with their thoughts of the film. About the film: A teenage delinquent (Miya Cech) befriends a surly magician (Rhea Perlman) who helps her navigate her inner demons and dysfunctional family with sleight of hand magic. A coming-of-age comedy that touches on unlikely friendships, grief and finding hope in the darkest moments. Official selection at Sundance Film Festival 2021 and Tribeca Film Festival 2021.
80 YEARS LATER (2022) – Monday, 5/6 at the ESQUIRE Theatre, presented by Asianati including a post-film discussion of the film and the history behind it. About the film: On the 80th anniversary of Executive Order 9066 that imprisoned Japanese Americans in World War II, such families continue to grapple with the legacy of their experience.
THE DEBUT (2000) - Tuesday, 5/7 at the ESQUIRE Theatre, presented by Filipino American Association of Southern Ohio including a post-film discussion regarding challenges facing first and second-generation Filipino Americans (and many children of immigrant families), including pressures of cultural preservation and familial obligations. About the film: A young man struggles with his desire to study art when his family thinks he's headed for premedical studies. Conflicts between Filipino traditions and expectations vs. personal dreams in the contemporary world erupt at his sister's debut.
DELIKADO (2022) - Thursday, 5/9 at the ESQUIRE, presented by OPAWL - Cincinnati Caucus. After the film, join Director and Producer Karl Malakunas in a virtual Q+A discussion along with local OPAWL members, and environmental activists Erin Fung and Lynn Hamamoto in-person. About the film: Palawan appears to be an idyllic tropical island. Its powder-white beaches and lush forests have made it one of Asia’s hottest new tourist destinations. But for a tiny network of environmental crusaders and vigilantes trying to protect its spectacular natural resources, it is more akin to a battlefield.
