BBQ & Barrels represents the culmination of 45 years of a cultural tradition in Owensboro and Daviess County. It is the celebration of our past, our present, and our future, bringing together two of Owensboro’s greatest traditions – authentic, unparalleled Owensboro barbecue and historic Kentucky bourbon.
Since 1979, people from all over have gathered in Owensboro, Kentucky, for the International Bar-B-Q Festival. Over the years, the festival continued to grow and evolve to include activities such as concerts, car shows, pageants, road races, and even a professional Mutton Eating Competition, with world champion Joey Chestnut taking the grand prize three years in a row. When COVID hit our area, the festival still continued with the Drive-Thru Festival, where festival organizers handed out free barbecue to thousands of people on the ‘traditional’ Bar-B-Q Festival weekend. Once larger gatherings were allowed again, the International Bar-B-Q Festival Board transitioned to the Bar-B-Q Block Party. The refocused event continued the barbecue tradition in Owensboro on the 2nd weekend in May, with dozens of barbecue vendors filling downtown Owensboro in addition to the church cooking teams and Backyard BBQ Cookoff competition.
In 2023, with the explosion of bourbon back into western Kentucky and Green River Distilling Co. playing a prominent role along the Bourbon Trail, event organizers introduced BBQ and Barrels – a celebration of two of Owensboro’s rich traditions! We brought the focus back to its roots- true Kentucky barbecue- while adding in elements of Kentucky bourbon. Guests love the familiarity of the traditional festival, including the Backyard BBQ Cookoff, church cooking teams, live music, carnival rides, and more barbecue vendors than you have ever seen in downtown Owensboro- all open to the general public! The Owensboro Convention Center is the home of the “Barrels,” offering ticketed bourbon tastings, food pairings, and educational classes.

Church Cooking Teams
Experience classic Owensboro barbecue as local church cooking teams sell their secret recipes that have become famous at their annual picnics, including BBQ sandwiches, chicken plates, burgoo by the cup or gallon, and more. Backyard Cookoff
The Backyard Cook-Off is an opportunity for backyard barbecue chefs to fire up their grills and smokers to compete among the best in the region! More than 40 cooking teams compete for pride and prizes as they apply their home-grown skills to cook up some of the best beef, chicken, and pork you’ll ever taste. Awards are presented in each category, and an overall Backyard Cook Grand Champion is selected.
BBQ & Food Trucks
Bring your appetite! Dozens of barbecue vendors and food trucks will take over 2nd Street in downtown Owensboro. BBQ and Barrels will feature the best barbecue in the region. Check back for a listing of all participating vendors!

Bourbon
Come sample a variety of bourbon from some of the most famous Kentucky Distilleries at the Owensboro Convention Center. VIP barbecue food pairings and select bourbon options will also be available. Take a bourbon-inspired class before the main event. Make it a bourbon-filled weekend with a food and bourbon pairing at Green River Distilling Company on Friday, May 10. Live Music
Country music singer Chris Janson will headline the BBQ and Barrels 2024 music lineup! The multi-platinum songwriter and “Buy Me a Boat” singer will take the event stage on Saturday, May 11 with music beginning at 5:30 PM. The FREE concert will be held on the Owensboro Convention Center’s front lawn in celebration of the venue’s 10th anniversary. The show will also include special guest and Kentucky native, Hannah Ellis. Fan Halen, a Van Halen tribute band, is set to rock the BBQ & Barrels stage on Friday, May 10 along with August Christopher with music beginning at 6:00 PM. A variety of other local bands and artists will provide entertainment throughout the festival weekend on both the event stage as well as the courthouse lawn on 2nd St.
Kentucky Champions Motorcar Invitational
Experience a car show unlike any others in the region at the inaugural Kentucky Champions Motorcar Invitational! See some of the most unique classic vehicles on display at the Owensboro Convention Center parking lot on Saturday, May 11 from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM.
BBQ 5K
Join the Owensboro Family YMCA for their annual fundraiser fun run. Work up a sweat, burn some calories, and build up an appetite for some delicious barbecue. Proceeds benefit the scholarship programs at the YMCA. Check back soon for more information on the 2024 BBQ 5K.
