A six-week introduction to traditional Japanese fencing.
About this Event

Kendo ('way of the sword') is a martial art descended from the kenjutsu (swordmanship) arts used by the samurai warriors of feudal Japan. It's a traditional style of fencing that's mainly practised for sport and fitness.

This beginners course will introduce you to the basics of kendo.

It will cover the fundamental techniques, such as how to hold a shinai (bamboo sword) as well as correct footwork, posture and targets. By the end of this course, you'll be ready to safely strike an opponent/partner.

Each class will run for 1 hour on Saturday mornings for 6 consecutive weeks.

  • Venue: Ashton Park Sports Centre (Dance Studio), Blackmoor’s Lane, BS3 2JL
  • Dates: Saturday 7th January to 11 February 2023
  • Time: 9-10am

Register for a FREE first session if you want to try kendo (space limited!)

If you want to continue, the cost of the full course is £50. Everything you need to get started will be provided - including the loan of a shinai (bamboo sword) - just bring yourself and wear clothing that's suitable for physical activity.

After the course, you'll be able to join the main practice - normally 7pm Tuesdays at Ashton Park School, BS3 2JL - with the aim of wearing bogu (protective armour) then trying jigeiko (sparring) within a few months.

This course is organised by Bristol Kendo Club, one of the oldest clubs in the country, which is affiliated with the UK's governing body, the British Kendo Association. For more information, visit bristolkendo.co.uk
