Kelly Bray and Jacob Hiser have been developing their duet music for the past two years in performances across the Northeast, and will release an album of improvisations later this year. They have also performed in trio and quintet configurations with Luther Gray, Brittany Karlson, and Marie Carroll. Their work focuses on exciting textures spanning across many styles and traditions.
Kelly Bray is an improviser recognized for her adventurous and dynamic performances. She completed her master’s degree in Contemporary Improvisation at the New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Joe Morris, Anthony Coleman, John McNeil, and Steve Emery. A resident of Somerville, Bray is a prominent figure in the Connecticut, Boston, and New York City improvised music scenes, regularly performing across the Northeast and in Canada. She has played with internationally recognized improvisors such as Joe Morris and Alan Braufman, and can be heard on recordings like "BRAY/DUVAL" (FIM Records), "Demo Tape" by Art Heist (released by Human Headstones Presents), and on the self-released "CRUMPLE ZONE" and "Live at Willimantic Records" (with Miranda Agnew).
Jacob Hiser is a Boston-based pianist and violinist. Originally from southern Missouri, he grew up playing bluegrass, blues, rock, and classical music. He studied jazz piano at Missouri State University with Kyle Aho, and Contemporary Improvisation at New England Conservatory. While at NEC, he studied with Ran Blake, Eden MacAdam-Somer, Bruce Brubaker, Joe Morris, and Frank Carlberg, and performed in ensembles and concerts directed by John Zorn, Jason Moran, Tanya Kalmanovich, and Anthony Coleman.
Jacob has performed across the United States, and in Canada, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Australia, and New Zealand. Currently he is piano faculty at Phillips Exeter Academy and rehearsal pianist for the Boston Children's Chorus. During the summers, he is a faculty member at the Missouri Fine Arts Academy: a two-week summer residential program for multi-disciplinary high school student artists.
He has released one album, “Seconds”, comprised mostly of original jazz compositions for quintet and trio. He appears on Walking Cliche Sextet’s “Micro-Nap” and Flora Carbo’s “Arthur’s Walks”.
