Kehinde Applewhite - "A SUM OF ME" - Opening Reception.

In A SUM OF ME, Kehinde Applewhite journeys into the material and metaphysical using stitching as a binding force of connection to time and space to create fabric collages that explore memories and personal histories. In this solo exhibition, Kehinde explores the connection to self through the use of second-hand textiles, reforming discarded material into beautifully layered and sophisticated collage works that act as portals to meaningful moments through Kehinde’s life. By using second-hand textiles, Applewhite considers color, texture, and pattern as a unique language of documenting their life and all that culminates the complexity of their existence. 

A SUM OF ME is a manifestation of rebirth, actualizing Applewhite’s transition from traditional fashion design to a materiality and textile-based practice guided by the ancestral knowledge of their paternal and maternal grandmothers who were textile, fabric, and fashion entrepreneurs. In A SUM OF ME, Applewhite breaks away from rigidity and uniformity, creating collage works that take shape in unique and fluid ways, collectively guiding the viewer through a journey of self-exploration and discovery. Through this presentation of works, Kehinde searches for identity and purpose, and ventures into memory and grief to find healing. This solo exhibition invites the viewer to search for the ways that materials can aid in processing time and memory, and honor the cyclical nature of our collective existence.

A SUM OF ME will be on view from July 2 to July 30, 2024, at 410 Loft Gallery,410 N Eutaw St, Baltimore, MD 21201. The opening reception will be held on July 6th from 6 PM - 8 PM, with the artist talk to follow on July, 18th from 6 PM - 9 PM. Please email applewhitekia@gmail to request a viewing.
