About this Event

The 2nd annual Heartland Book Festival will take place on October 12 at the Central Library in downtown Kansas City with authors, books, activities, and more! Join us in the Helzberg Auditorium for a discussion on the attraction of reading and writing short stories and essays!

A collection of short stories or essays is like a literary buffet. Writers experiment with a variety of subjects, formats, and styles, while their readers sample small bites of the authors’ ideas and imagination. In a conversation moderated by New Letters on the Air host Angela Elam, Kansas City authors Catherine Browder (Resurrection City: Stories from the Disaster Zone), Dawn Downey (Blindsided: Essays from the Only Black Woman in the Room), and Kenan Orhan (I Am My Country and Other Stories) share writing techniques and talk about what inspires them to keep it short.

Book signing with authors to follow.

The Heartland Book Festival is co-presented by the Kansas City Public Library, Missouri Humanities, and the Missouri Center for the Book.
