About this Event

The King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center and Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī Coalition invite you to Aliʻiōlani Hale to experience Ke Kauā o Ka Lāhui: The Life of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole Pi‘ikoi, a living history theater performance about Prince Kūhiō’s remarkable life, from his childhood as a young aliʻi through his lifelong commitment to improving the welfare of the people of Hawaiʻi. Featuring cast: J. Kamamo Bailon, Maya Mahinalani Berengue, James Keawe Bright, Alaka’i Kevin Cunningham, Kealaula “Lala” Faifili, and Charles Kupahu Timtim.

The performance will take place in the Judiciary History Center's 1913 Courtroom on the ground floor of Aliʻiōlani Hale.

Ke Kauā o Ka Lāhui: The Life of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole Pi‘ikoi was written by Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl and directed/produced by Sammie Choy, in conversation with many scholars, teachers, and civic leaders who continue to mālama Prince Kūhiō’s legacy in their work. A brief talk-story with Hawaiian scholar Dr. M. Kawēlau Wright will follow the performance.

The performance, which originally debuted at ‘Iolani Palace on September 4, 2022, is made possible by the Hawai‘i Pono‘ī Coalition and Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities, with initial funding from National Endowment for the Humanities A More Perfect Union Initiative and the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
