Headliner: Katia CardenasA luminous, multi-genre vocalist, and international touring artist based in St. Paul, MN, Katia Cardenas inspires audiences with her smooth, powerful voice and infectious, uplifting energy. Recognized for her impeccable range, and dynamic stylings, she has been performing since an early age. Performing an inspired and enticing variety of musical styles with the Twin Cities’ top players, she has been described as having “the pipes to get over an R&B tune, but also has the instincts and subtlety to handle jazz standards.” (Rhythm & Grooves)
Making music in the Twin Cities has been a family tradition ever since her father, keyboardist Mark Cardenas, joined “The Time” in the early 1980s and appeared in Prince’s iconic film, "Purple Rain." Katia emerged on the Twin Cities music scene in 2014, and quickly rose to prominence, performing at respected venues and events throughout Minneapolis/St. Paul, including Dakota Jazz Club, The Icehouse, kj's hideaway, Crooners, Jazz Central Studios, Saturday Night Jazz, Twin Cities Jazz Festival and more!
Throughout her career, she has performed with respected local show bands, including Casablanca Orchestra and Boogie Wonderland. She released her debut jazz album "I'll Be Seeing You" in 2016, and launched her first international tour in Mexico in late 2018 with Mexico-based Latin jazz combo, Jazzoneando. Katia took a hiatus from performing 2019-2021 after developing a voice condition that she continues to work with to this day. Despite this challenging condition, she has since reemerged, performing more of her own original music, diving deeper into her jazz repertoire and launching a tribute show to Sara Bareilles. Katia is overjoyed to be "back at it" and sounding better than ever! Come see what all the buzz is about...
Opening Set by Fuzzy Math
Lineup -- Mark Vandermyde keys, Andrew Schwandt tenor sax, Matt Peterson bass, Ben Ehrlich drums
Fuzzy Math has been a fixture on the Twin Cities scene for over a decade, led by keyboardist-composer Mark Vandermyde and featuring some of the finest players in town. They recently released their 5th CD offering more of their uniquely eclectic blend of original jazz and creative pop covers for which the StarTribune once named them to its Best of Minnesota list for “best jazz act for people bored with jazz”. Racket (successor to City Pages arts beat) called them “fluid as hell…generously melodic…alternately tender and brawny…nuanced…this is jazz that never gets too far out but never dawdles too close to home – a genuine sweet spot.” Their goal is to create music that’s interesting, accessible and fun, something for everyone, and they hope you enjoy it all.
