Glorious vocal harmonies, energetic rhythms and the wildest of piping.Named after the old Northumbrian word for twilight, ‘The Darkening’ blend ancient instruments like pipes and lyres with modern sounds like synths, drums, and electric guitar. Their music is a dazzling mix of tradition and innovation – think folk roots with a futuristic twist. Their sound is rich, rhythmic, and full of surprises – from haunting harmonies to foot-stomping beats.
Kathryn’s extraordinary career started with tunes passed down by shepherds and family. Over time, she’s explored jazz, global music, and even orchestral works. Her heart has stayed close to Northumberland, exploring and cultivating her bountiful native heritage. She began playing the Northumbrian pipes at the age of nine, a task she once described as ‘trying to tame an octopus’.
The band is based near Hadrian’s Wall, but their music reaches far beyond. They dive into stories, landscapes, and people from the past 2000 years. Their songs speak of freedom, nature, and finding light after darkness.
