Don't miss your opportunity to hear award-winning Canadian author and cartoonist Kate Beaton discuss her graphic memoir 'Ducks' with Victoria writer Lee Henderson!'Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands' is an autobiographical comic chronicling the author's experience as a woman from Atlantic Canada working in the Athabasca oil sands in Alberta in the mid 2000's, as a means of paying off her student loans. The incredible graphic memoir chronicles the the harsh reality of life in the oil sands and tackles themes of resource extraction, loneliness, sexual assault and more, and won Canada Reads in 2023. Kate Beaton has also written and illustrated several children's books, including her most recent, 'Shark Girl', published in 2025.
Lee Henderson is a Canadian writer and award-winning author of multiple books, including the story collection 'The Broken Record Technique', and the novels 'The Road Narrows As You Go' and 'The Man Game', which won the BC Book Prize and the Vancouver Book Prize in 2009. He teaches creative writing at the University of Victoria, where he now serves as the Chair and Associate Professor in the Writing Department.
