Learn to cut your own stencil and then dye with it and the artist's vintage stencils in indigo using the rice paste used by Katazome artists
About this Event

What will I learn?

In this class you will learn how to cut your own stencil using the traditional Kakishibugami handmade paper, which has been soaked and bonded together by the juice of the Persimmon fruit and then dried and smoked to create an almost entirely waterproof paper, ideal for stencil work.

You will then learn how to use Katagami stencils with a rice paste resist, dyeing with indigo.

Content:

  • Your tutor will also explain about the history of Katagami stencil cutting and Katazome stencil dyeing in Japan, the four types of stencil cutting techniques and show you a number of vintage stencils and stencilled fabrics, including some from the Edo and Meiji periods.
  • You will cut your own simple stencil which you can use on the day and take away with you as a souvenir
  • How to make the rice paste used as a resist for all Katazome (stencilling with indigo)
  • How to paste fabric for dyeing with a variety of stencils including your own, those made by the tutor and some modern Japanese stencils
  • How to use a persimmon paper cone (Nori tsu tsu) to draw with paste
  • You will use stencils to dye a number of samples
  • How to dye your fabrics in a genuine indigo vat
  • How to set up and maintain your own indigo vat at home

Who is this class for?: Beginner / looking for an introduction to Japanese stencilling

Duration: One day (6 hours)

Location: This class is available at the Artist’s studio in Muswell Hill only
