Kasper Leung: 2016 to Now (Birds&Scary Things) is a long term, performative participant observation on the influence of the education system in the development of creativity in early childhood. The final exhibition will propose the largest retrospective of the artist in Asia outside his studio in Mongkok. Featuring more than 200 works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, and archival material, this exhibition surveys Leung's career from the earliest drawings he made as a toddler during the late 2010's to his most recent sound art pieces. Organised chronologically and thematically, the retrospective guides visitors through Leung's career-long creative pouring, exploring the years prior to his schooling in formal education. The exhibition traces the transition in Leung's creation after finally enrolling in elementary school in 2022, questioning the ambivalent power of education: both empowering and imposing at once.About the Artist
Kasper Leung (b. 2016, Hong Kong) is one of the most important and influential Sham Shui Po artists in the history of contemporary art. He is renowned for his prolific and ground-breaking practice, spanning paintings, sculptures, performances, moving images, and large-scale installations. Not yet systematised by formal education, he has been living in Sham Shui Po and soon established himself in the local avant-garde for his unique and radical artistic language. Finally enrolling into elementary school in Mongkok in September 2022, he has relentlessly reinvented and created art that resonates with the time in which he lives.
