SILVER LINING: KARRIN ALLYSON SINGS SONGS OF BONNIE RAITT

Karrin Allyson (vocal/piano
)

Chris Caswell (keyboards)

Jay Young (electric bass)

Jerome Jennings (drums
)

Rod Fleeman (guitar)

With 16 albums under her belt and five Grammy nominations to date, Karrin Allyson returns to Birdland with her interpretations of the timeless recordings of American Blues/Rock mainstay, Bonnie Raitt.

Like Bonnie, Karrin was born into a musical family. Karrin has been a fan of Bonnie Raitt since first introduced to her music as a teenager. Drawn to her signature groove and soulful voice, Allyson’s music has been influenced by Raitt's style since before she began her study of the jazz canon. Raitt is among the musicians that have inspired Karrin to continue writing her own songs throughout her career, (she released an all-original album “Some of that Sunshine” in 2018) and like Bonnie, glides effortlessly between genres, incorporating elements from Blues, Folk, Pop and Standards into every set. The through-line in both vocalists' styles is the emotion steeped into every lyric, selling their stories completely. From their parallels as vocalists, bandleaders, songwriters, and activists, Karrin singing Bonnie is a can’t miss musical match.

For this week-long engagement, Karrin has assembled a band with varied musical backgrounds who will pay loving homage to Bonnie’s music and lyrics. She will be joined on stage by her writing partner, Chris Caswell (keys/organ), her longtime guitarist, KC native, Rod Fleeman, Jay Young, hailing from Minneapolis on mostly electric bass, and dynamo drummer Jerome Jennings.

Allyson’s gift for curating a setlist will be complemented by Raitt’s impressive recording career spanning 45 years. Listeners can expect the band to reach back into the ’70s to Woman Be Wise, You Gotta Know, Guilty, and The Glow, as well as tapping her more current songs, Silver Lining, Have a Heart, and Valley of Pain.
