Pečlivá kytara Geoffa Fariny a jeho klidný, civilní hlas. Jazzově hravá basa Jeffa Goddarda a přesné, strohé bicí Gavina McCarthyho. Křehké písně o křupajícím sněhu, vrčení ledničky v tichém bytě, o věčných ztrátách. Bostonští Karate si záhy po svém vzniku v roce 1993 našli naprosto charakteristický zvuk: Farinova kytarová záliba v prehistorickém blues (a vlastně jeho vášeň k čemukoliv hudebně starému a dřevnímu) našla nečekanou v oporu v postpunkové estetice a výsledkem byly klíčové desky jako In Place of Real Insight (1997) nebo The Bed Is In The Ocean (1998).Karate se rozpadli po albu Pockets (2004): Geoff Farina se vydal na pozoruhodnou sólovou dráhu (založil ale třeba i nedoceněné trio Glorytellers), Gavin McCarthy se realizoval coby bubeník v Thalia Zedek Band a noiseovém triu E. Comeback Karate v roce 2022 vyústil v novou desku Make It Fit (2024), která nabízí všechny známé ingredience, ale trochu překvapivě se na mnoha místech přiklání k rockovější poloze, která rezonovala v úplných začátcích kapely. S obrovskou radostí oznamujeme, že Karate v rámci svého evropského turné po dlouhých letech znovu zamíří do Prahy: Geoff Farina, Jeff Goddard a Gavin McCarthy zahrají 25. dubna v MeetFactory.

Koncert podpoří hned dva hostující hudební projekty. Prvním z nich bude chicagské duo Kinsella & Pulse, LLC. Jména Tim Kinsella a Jenny Pulse můžete znát z kapel Joan of Arc, Cap'n Jazz nebo Spa Moans. Jejich společná tvorba je plná art-rockových koláží, avant-popu a elektronických experimentů. V MeetFactory představí svou novou desku Open ing Night, která vychází týden před koncertem. Druhého hosta oznámíme brzy.

Formed in Boston in 1993 by Geoff Farina, Eamonn Vitt and Gavin McCarthy, Karate added Jeff Goddard on bass in 1995. The band released six studio albums, two EPs, numerous singles, and split 7”s between 1994 and 2005. From punk roots, the band ventured widely—veering into jazz-rock, post-rock and a unique version of slowcore in its progressive indie experimentation. Vitt left for med school in 97 and Farina called the band quits in 2005 because of hearing issues.
Something happened in the meantime. The band’s albums on Southern Records went out of print. And the label’s founder John Loder passed in 2005, complicating things. In 2020, a Chicago Reader article noticed Karate’s albums were fetching rare vinyl prices online. Longtime fans the Numero Group stepped in and offered to help the band get its albums back—literally sending a van to the North of England to pick up Karate’s master tapes.
Karate reunited in 2022 to support the re-release of its music on Numero Group. Time Expired, a 5-LP set, focused on the trio’s later albums and EPs.
Album titled Make It Fit, the first new music from the post-emo trio in two decades, followed in October 2024. Out of the brain of Geoff Farina spills 10 new tales from their unlikely reunion, tracked with long-time Karate collaborator Andy Hong. Make It Fit crams 35 minutes of Wes Montgomery homage, Fugazi dub plate party rocking, Lynott lyricism, and Clash city crooning into a graceful seventh album.
The band is returning to Prague after many long years to play a headline show at MeetFactory on Friday April 25.

The night will feature two guest projects. First announced is the Chicago-based duo Kinsella & Pulse, LLC. You may recognize the names of Tim Kinsella and Jenny Pulse from Joan of Arc, Cap'n Jazz, or Spa Moans. Their collaborative work is an amalgam of art-rock collages, mutant pop and electronic experiments. The duo will present their brand new album Open ing Night, which is set for official release a week before the Prague show. Second support TBA.
