Instructor: Shaun Deller
Max Class Size: 8 students
Description:
Learn how to use the bark of North Idaho’s native birch trees to weave beautiful and functional sheaths for knives or other sharp edge tools. The bark of birch trees has been used for centuries by various northern cultures around the globe to make containers, homes, canoes and more. The two styles of sheaths we will explore are rooted in Scandinavian tradition. This class does not require prior experience in weaving.
About the Instructor:
Shaun Deller is an artist who lives on a small farm in Priest River, Idaho. He has too many hobbies. Among these are, drawing, painting, wood carving, traditional hide tanning, parfleche painting, unicycling, wilderness survival, gardening, ice skating, scythe mowing and being a history nerd when it comes to the life and travels of explorer, David Thompson. Shaun holds a BFA degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art. In addition to teaching at the Kaniksu Folk School, he also teaches wood work classes to kids at the Sandpoint Waldorf School.
