KAMAY KAMAY: A Sensory Summer Feast by Friki Cocina

KAMAY KAMAY is a new, seasonal series of FIlipino-focused dinner experiences serving touch-driven meal spreads in the intimate and communal style of a traditional Kamayan feast.

A Kamayan feast is a traditional Filipino gathering in which a meal is prepared specifically to be eaten with hands and shared among loved ones, neighbors, and community. This tradition originates from the ancient practice of pooling together individual food offerings in order to build a meal that is large enough for feeding an entire family or tribe. Bred as a collaborative response to scarcity and starcation, the Kamayan feast became a powerful tool for transmuting struggle into abundance and collective solidarity. Today, we adopt the Filipino tradition of the Kamayan feast as an enduring means of fostering community care - and we celebrate the universal custom of eating with our hands as a core aspect of the human experience.

In our modern society, eating with our hands is a sacred act in which we allow ourselves the complete & total experience of our nourishment.

To eat with our hands is to reject indoctrination of the belief that it is unusual and dirty to engage our sense of touch in our experience of food.

To eat with our hands is to reject indoctrination of the belief that it is shameful and wrong to engage our sense of touch in our experience of self-pleaasure.

To eat with our hands is to extend radical acceptance towards ourselves, our neighbors and our community.
